Biography:
Born in Lyon, Claude Audran first worked as a decorative painter for Louis XIV in his Versailles and Fontainebleu palaces. A talented and varied artist, he painted many things from walls to harpsichords. Audran also designed patterns for embroidery, church vestments, and stained-glass windows, which led to his position as a designer at the Gobelins manufactory in 1699. He was later appointed curator of the Palais de Luxembourg in 1704. Audran’s work was very popular in Sweden and the monarch attempted several times to employ him in the Swedish court. Audran’s work also had a profound effect on later artists, primarily his student Jean-Antoine Watteau.
