Biography:
James Barry received his first break in 1763 upon meeting Irish writer and statesman, Edmund Burke. Burke encouraged Barry to move to London and also paid for his stay abroad from 1766 to 1771, most of this time spent in Rome. Inspired by the allegorical work of the Renaissance masters, Barry was adamant about creating historical art despite the domination of portraiture in the British art market. In 1782, he was appointed professor of painting at the Royal Academy but was dismissed in 1799 for slandering his colleagues. Barry died in poverty in 1612 and was buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral.
