Biography:
At the age of twenty, Francois-Joseph Belanger was admitted to the Academie Royale d’Architecture. He was appointed the court’s Designer of Entertainments in 1767 and became its director in 1777. He was also the architect of Louis XVI’s brother, the comte d’Artois. Belanger created decorations for many royal events and ceremonies, including Louis XV’s funeral, the coach for Louis XVI’s coronation, and jewel cabinet for Marie-Antoinette. Because of Belanger’s support of the French Revolution, he was imprisoned in 1794 for six months. In 1814, when the monarchy was restored, he designed the royal ceremonies and the new French seal.
