Biography:
William H. Bell and his brother-in-law opened a daguerreotype studio in Philadelphia in 1848 until two years later, when he left the business to work with other operators. Already a veteran of the Mexican War, Bell joined the Union army and fought in the battles of Antietam and Gettysburg during the Civil War. After his service, he was appointed the chief photographer for the Army Medical Museum in Washington D.C. Bell founded another studio in Philadelphia and not long after was commissioned to accompany Lieutenant George Wheeler on an expedition to Arizona for the United States Geological Survey. His experience led to later employment photographing for the Pennsylvania railroad.
