Biography:
Originally apprenticed in his hometown of Amsterdam, Bartholomeus Breenbergh moved to Italy at the age of twenty. He lived with a Flemish artist, Paul Brill and also deeply admired the landscapes of German painter, Adam Elsheimer. Inspired by the light and atmosphere of Italian art, Breenbergh was one of the first Dutch Italianates and helped to bring the tradition to the Northern European countries. In 1633, Breenbergh was living in Holland and painted scenes that often included Roman ruins. He also began creating larger images of biblical and mythological figures, mostly from the Old Testament. Breenbergh then began painting narrative scenes and portraits. In the last years of his life, his output decreased dramatically and he may have become a merchant.
