Artist: I Coecke Van Aelst Pieter (1502 - 1550) Biography:
Pieter Coecke was born in Aelst where his father was the mayor. He may have studied under Bernaert van Orley in Brussels and later traveled to Italy from 1525 to 1526. Coecke joined the Antwerp’s painter’s guild in 1527 and began taking apprentices two years later. Coecke’s most famous painting, the Last Supper, was replicated forty-one times in his workshop. He was also named court painter to Emperor Charles V shortly before his death.
