Biography:
John Gibson began his career in Liverpool as a mason. In 1817, he moved to London and befriended Flaxman, who encouraged him to travel to Rome. In Italy, he studied under Canova and Thorvaldsen. He eventually settled there for good, visiting England occasionally. He was internationally known as a neoclassical sculptor. His best-known work was a colored statue entitled Tinted Venus. Upon his death, Gibson left most of his money to the Royal Academy.
