Biography:
Spencer Gore was the son of the first Wimbledon champion, Spencer Walter Gore and also the nephew of the bishop of London, Charles Gore. From 1896 to 1899, he studied at the Slade School and became friends with Harold Gilman. After visiting Sickert in1904, Gore developed an interest in French painting. On his return to London, he became a member of the Allied Artists’ Association in 1908. He also joined the Camden Town group, serving as its first president in 1911. At first, Gore was inspired by Impressionism but was later more attracted to Roger Fry’s Post-Impressionist style. Gore died prematurely from pneumonia at the age of thirty-five.
