Biography:
Horatio Greenough was an American sculptor who spent the majority of his life studying in Italy. His greatest work was the large marble statue of George Washington, created from 1833 to 1841. The sculpture was originally placed at the Capitol in Washington D.C. but is now located at the National Museum of American History. It is a seated figure based on Phidias’s statue of Zeus at Olympia. In the final years of his life, Greenough began writing essays on art that are more highly regarded than his sculpture.
