Biography:
John Heartfield was a leading designer, painter, and journalist of the Dada movement in Berlin. He mostly remembered for pioneering and mastering the art of photomontage. His work is often an attack on German nationalism, militarism and Nazism, a cause that was fueled by the First World War. During this time, he anglicized his name from Helmut Herzfelde as an additional form of protest. After receiving difficulty from the Nazis because of his work, he left for London in 1938 and produced designs for Penguin Books. In 1950, Heartfield returned to Berlin and died in his native city.
