Biography:
Adolf van Hildebrand studied in Munich before traveling to Italy in 1867. During this visit, he encountered German philosophers and art theorist who inspired him. He moved to Italy in 1872 to study Florentine Renaissance sculpture. In 1884, Hildebrand’s work was recognized in as an exhibition in Berlin and thus established his reputation in Germany. Seven years later, he received a commission to design a fountain in Munich. This project made him famous and he gained many clients thereafter. Hildebrand’s sculpture was highly influenced by that of Michelangelo. His ideas on form had a profound impact of the development of Modernism.
