Biography:
Robert Howlett learned the photographic technique by associating with other amateur practitioners. He began exhibiting his work at London’s Photographic Society in 1856. In the same year, he published a booklet titled “On the Various Methods of Printing Photographic Pictures upon Paper, with Suggestions for Their Preservation.” He also designed and sold portable darkroom tents. Around this time he formed a partnership with Joseph Cundall and the pair established a commercial studio in London. He was commissioned by the London Times to shoot a series of photographs that documented the construction of the largest steamship built in the 19th century, The Great Eastern. He died at the young age of twenty-seven as a result of over-exposure to the chemicals used in the photographic process.
