Biography:
Adelaide-Labille Guiard first trained under a miniaturist and then studied pastels and portraiture with Maurice-Quentin de la Tour. She joined the Academie Royale in 1783 and was also a talented and dedicated teacher. Her portraits were sophisticated in their subtle color and perception. They gained her respect and patronage from the court and fellow artists and she was also named official painter to the daughters of Louis XV. During the French Revolution, Labille-Guiard was a supporter and her fellow revolutionaries forced her to destroy one of her large monarchy-related paintings. Her most ambitious piece up to that date, she never had the strength to begin another monumental piece because of bad health.
