Biography:
Dutch painter, Pieter van Laer spent most of his career in Rome where he was nicknamed Il Bamboccio or Little Clumsy One. He was given this name because his body was deformed, which can be seen in his self-portrait held at the Pallavincini Gallery. Van Laer was a leader of the Schildersbent fraternal order of artists. He was the first artist to specialize in street scenes and his work became popular with many collectors. Van Laer also had a number of followers called the Bamboccianti. In 1638, he returned to his hometown of Haarlem.
