Biography: Francesco Laurana was born in Dalmatia, located in modern Croatia. A city colonized by Venetians, it was here that Laurana was first influenced while training under an Italian sculptor. In 1453, he moved to Naples and began working as a sculptor. He then worked in the courts in Sicily and Provence, France. Laurana produced Madonna and Child statues, tomb sculptures, arches and medals. His innovative abstract forms and oval-shaped figures made him the predecessor of Constantin Brancusi.
