Biography:
Pier Francesco Mola was the son of an architect. He left Rome to travel in Bologna in Venice between the years of 1633 and 1647 and studied under an assistant of Annibale Carracci and Domenichino. Guernico also influenced him. Mola returned to his home city of Rome in 1647 and began painting in the romantic style using chiaroscuro. He was given commissions for altarpieces and frescoes that brought together elements of the Roman High Renaissance and North Italian art. Mola favored idyllic settings that featured biblical characters or saints. At the end of his career, his paintings became overly dramatic and therefore attracted fewer commissions. A lawsuit drained him financially in 1644, but he was elected the head of the Accademia di San Luca in 1662. He resigned from the position a year later due to failing health.
