Biography:
Jean-Marc Nattier was the son of a portrait painter father and miniaturist mother. He studied with them before attending the Academie Royale where he won a prize for drawing. Although his godfather, Jean Jouvenet wanted him to attend the Academie de France in Rome, he remained in Paris working there for the majority of his life except for brief employment in Holland in 1717. Nattier attended the Academie Royale in 1718 and began creating oil and pastels portraits, mostly of females. He tended to add classical Greek and Roman elements to his sitters, a style that was popular until the 1740’s when a more realistic approach was preferred. Nattier ceased painting in 1762 because of illness and financial problems.
