Biography:
Jean-Baptiste Oudry’s father was a painter and art dealer. However he first studied with portraitist, Nicolas de Largilliere. By 1720 he began painting animals, hunts and landscapes. He joined the Academie de Peinture at de Sculpture in 1719 and began teaching there in 1743. Oudry began designing tapestries in 1726 and became the director of the Beauvais tapestry manufactory in 1734. Two years later, he was appointed the head of the Gobelins manufactory. In addition, he had a large studio that was consistently receiving commissions from clients that included Czar Peter the Great of Russia and the queen of Sweden. Oudry’s work was noted for its attention to detail and interest in light and reflection.
