Biography:
Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain and moved to Paris in 1900 where he lived for a long time. He was the founder of the abstract movement in 20th-century art. When he arrived in Paris he first fell into an artistic atmosphere of poetic melancholy. In his so-called Blue Period (1902-1904) he created sad images of beggars and derelicts, the tonalities of the paintings were blues, dull whites and grays - -The Old Guitarist - (1903). In 1906 Picasso and George Braques (1886-1963) developed the early stages of Cubism. Picasso's - The Demoiselles d'Avignon - (1906-7) is an early Cubist painting where the figures and their setting are broken up into angular shapes. Both their paintings are characterized by sharp edges and angles approaching prisms with restrained colors. By 1910 Cubism was well established, and by the outbreak of World War II Picasso had become the most famous living painter. Picasso resumed contact with the classical tradition and synthesized the 2 styles into his distinct style best represented by his mural - Guernica - (1937). Guernica was inspired by the bombing of the Guernica, the ancient capital of the Basques in northern Spain. It does not represent the event itself but rather evokes the agony of total war through a symbolic representation of the scene. He is the most influential painter of the 20th-century masters as the aesthetic of Cubism has in some way influenced almost every major artist and movement since 1907. Spanish born Pablo Ruiz Y Picasso, moved to Paris at the age of 19, after studying art in Barcelona. His Blue Period lasted from 1901 to 1904 during which he focused his work on people on the fringe of society such as circus performers and the homeless. Picasso’s Rose Period(1904-1906) depicted similar subjects in more hopeful colors. This period is thought to be one of the few times in Picasso’s life when he was content. The highlight of his career came with the completion of Les Demoiselles D’Avignon, which marked the beginning of Cubism and dubbed Picasso as the most influential artist of the 20th century. Another important juncture in Picasso’s work was Guernica, a political piece inspired by the deteriorating social conditions brought about by the Spanish Civil War. Disheartened by the situation in his native country, Picasso spent the remainder of his life in France.
