Biography:
After the death of his parents in 1581, Francisco Ribalta moved from Barcelona to Madrid and studied the paintings in the Spanish royal collection. Influenced by the Spanish and Italian artists who were decorating the El Escorial palace at the time, Ribalta began to develop a Mannerist style. He moved to Valencia in 1598 and began working for an archbishop until 1511. As his commissions began to dwindle, Ribalta departed from his religious painting to a more introspective approach. Although he probably never traveled to Italy, his work began to utilize the somber feel and chiaroscuro of the Italian Baroque movement.
