Biography:
Initially named Francesco de’Rossi, he was the son of a Florentine weaver who decided upon a career in painting at an early age. At the age of fourteen, he began training with one of Florence’s leading sculptors and five years later, he entered the workshop of Giorgio Vasari. His first commission came from Cardinal Giovanni Salviati at the age of twenty-one, whose name he adopted. Salviati’s paintings were executed in a Mannerist style with lots of imaginatively posed figures. His distinctive style earned him fame in Italy and in France. He also designed tapestries and produced some portraits
