Biography:
Carlo Saraceni trained in Venice before moving to Rome in 1598. He joined the Accademia di San Luca and began painting small biblical and mythological scenes on copper. He was inspired by the style of German artist Adam Elsheimer and their paintings were often confused. Upon Elsheimer’s death in 1920, Saraceni attracted more business and received commissions for many altarpieces in and around Rome. He began studying the work of Caravaggio, interested in his large figures and subtle use of lighting. Saraceni’s landscapes with significant in the artistic development of Pieter Lastman and Claude Lorrain.
