Biography:
Camille Silvy initially studied law and then became a diplomat before taking up photography after a visit to Algeria. He formulated a career by photographing the landscapes in his native region outside of Paris. In 1858, Silvy became a member of the Societe Francaise de Photographie and then moved to London a year later to open a portrait studio. While in England, he also joined the photographic society there and specialized in the carte-de-visite form of portraiture. Silvy sold his London studio in 1868 and returned to France where exposure from toxic photographic chemical ultimately killed him at the age of seventy-five.
