Biography:
William Theed was named after his father, and English painter and sculptor who is remembered for his piece Hercules Taming the Thracian Horses. William Theed II initially trained with his father. He then studied under E. H. Baily before attending the Royal Academy Schools. In 1826, Theed moved to Rome where he worked for Thorvaldsen and John Gibson. In 1848, he returned to London where he was a leading Victorian sculptor. He produced a number of portrait busts and a large group sculpture titled Africa for the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens.
