Biography:
Pierre-Philippe Thomire trained as a sculptor before turning to bronze casting. He worked in Pierre Gouthiere’s workshop and then set up his own studio in 1775. Thomire began assisting Jean-Claude-Thomas Duplessis in making mounts for the Sevres Porcelain Manufactory. After Duplessis dies in 1783, Thomire took over the position and continued to produce porcelain mounts through the French Revolution. He began selling furniture in 1804 in addition to porcelain and other decorative objects. In 1809, Thomire became Engraver to the Emperor under Napoleon and his business became Furniture Suppliers to their Majesties two years later. The lucrative workshop managed to stay afloat even after Napoleon’s downfall, and Thomire retired at the age of seventy-two. He then continued to sculpt and exhibit at the Salon until his eighties.
