Biography:
Scottish artist, Sir David Wilkie studied at the Trustees’ Academy in Edinburgh beginning in 1799 and was inspired by the work of fellow Scottish artists, Alexander Carse and David Allan. Wilkie painted their same subjects, focusing on peasant life. He traveled to London in 1805 to study at the Royal Academy and he had his debut a year later. Wilkie became the Painter-in-Ordinary to King William IV in 1830 and was knighted in 1836. His reputation was founded on his honest portrait painting and detailed genre paintings.
