Biography:
Joseph Wilton trained in Flanders and Paris before moving to Rome to pursue his interest in classical sculpture. He began producing plaster casts and copies of antique sculptures, a collection that was later purchased by Charles Lennox. Wilton moved to Florence in 1751, where he solidified his reputation as a classical sculptor. He returned to London and became the director of Lennox’s Richmond House gallery and set up a large workshop. He became Statuary to his Majesty and was commissioned to create a statue of George III in 1761. Wilton inherited a large inheritance in 1768 that caused him to abandon sculpture.
